In about 10 weeks, the doors to the new Zachry Engineering Education Complex (ZACH) will open. As crews finish furniture and equipment installations, our IT staff is working on connectivity and technology testing. Faculty and staff will begin moving into the Zachry building in late July. Here’s a peek inside of this outstanding facility.
Future classes of undergraduate engineering students studying at Texas A&M University, one of the largest and most prestigious engineering schools in the United States, will have access to some of the most innovative advanced automation technologies in use at industrial facilities around the world as a result of a $1.5 million donation by global technology and engineering company Emerson.
This past semester, a group of engineering students at Texas A&M University has been working closely with an artist from New York to help her design a new smoke painting tool. Rosemarie Fiore isn’t a traditional painter. Instead of using paint brushes and paint, she uses fireworks and colorful smoke to create beautiful large-scale paintings.
The multidisciplinary and shared nature of these labs represent a paradigm shift from the previous laboratory structure at Texas A&M and used by other universities. In addition to efficient use of space and equipment, common labs also provide greater instructor and student access to a larger variety of laboratory equipment, increasing experiential learning opportunities.
In addition to active learning studios for class instruction, the Zachry Engineering Education Complex (ZACH) will offer students 30,000 square feet of multidisciplinary, hands-on learning laboratory space. The labs span three floors in Zachry and are grouped into nine focus areas: materials, fluids, high bay, large-scale processes, controls, cyber-physical and transport phenomena.
Progress continues with the Zachry Engineering Education Complex. Students, faculty and staff will be able to enjoy this new facility beginning with the start of the fall semester on Aug. 27, 2018. A formal building dedication is set for Friday, Sept. 7, so mark your calendar to save the date. Zachry building occupants will begin receiving moving related information in March.
